GUEST SPEAKER – JIM ABBOTT

Jim Abbott is an American former professional baseball left handed pitcher. He played in the MLB for the California Angels, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers, from 1989 to 1999. He was successful at the big-league level despite having been born without a right hand. He spent hours as a youngster bouncing a baseball off a wall to practice his fielding. He would wear a right-hander’s fielder’s glove over the end of his right arm and while completing his follow-through after delivering a pitch, he rapidly switched the glove to his pitching (left) hand so he could handle any balls hit back to him.

Jim Abbott won the Golden Spikes award in 1987 as the best Collegiate baseball player at the University of Michigan. Post University Jim went directly from the University of Michigan to the MLB without spending a day in the minor leagues. In his rookie season he won 12 games with a 3.92 ERA .

In 1991 he was one of the best young left-handers in the game winning 18 games for the Angels while posting a 2.89 ERA and finishing 3rd  in the Al Cy Young race. One of the more memorable feats in his career came in the heat of the pennant race where Abbott tossed a 4-0 no-hitter on September 4th 1993 against Cleveland.
